Book Review: In New York By Marc Brown

Well I’m back, from a very unexpected hiatus of sorts. My sincerest apologies to those who read and missed this space as I disappeared for over two months with no explanation. I’m here now to start it up again and to offer my excuses. I cannot wait to share a marvelous new book from March of this year that perfectly fits my current situation and title for this post. I am in New York friends! Long story short, after over a year of waiting for the right job, we have relocated our little family to the amazing borough of Manhattan. We have longed for this change and are taking the city by storm. Can I just tell you how many incredible children’s book events, venues, and even just picture books revolve around NYC! The process however of getting us moved in a short amount of time took up all spare moments and this blog suffered the most I’m afraid. Family came first.

Book Review: Snow Is Falling By Branley & Stone

We had a surprise visit of snow hit us yesterday and while it wreaked havoc on many places in the southern U.S., we were fortunate to be safe at home and watch it fall in the largest amount we’ve received here. While getting cozy near the fire, this book came to mind. My enjoyment for non-fiction books continues to grow and I now have a serious soft-spot for this vintage series of science books called Let’s-Read-And-Find-Out. A local used bookstore occasionally has them on the shelf and I just cannot help but continue accumulating them as they cross my path. A lot of the authors are the same, including Franklyn M. Branley who wrote this one, but the illustrators vary and many are incredibly well-known and accomplished with their own publications. Seeing their illustrations for this series is so much fun! I assume the science is perhaps a bit outdated here and there, but overall each book has general information on its subject and opens the door to questions and curiosity about the world around. Take a peek at this 1963 sweet edition all about this white winter weather, Snow Is Falling by Franklyn M. Branley, illustrated by Helen Stone.

Book Review: Big Snow By Jonathan Bean

Waiting is a tricky part of life and especially childhood. There are so many exciting things that occur but almost all of them come with a waiting period: birthdays, Christmas, first day of school, a trip somewhere, and even a snowstorm! I’ve been longing to write about this book ever since it crossed my path during the Cybils evaluations and today seems like the perfect day. The forecast called for snow today, but most of us here in the South tend to just roll our eyes and not dare hold our breath. We did get a spit of snow, but it melted faster than it came. But, that waiting to see if the forecast would hold true, that is the essence of this book. Here is Big Snow by Jonathan Bean, 2013.

Book Review: The Mitten By Tresselt & Yaroslava

My posting seems to be as sporadic as the weather this winter. However, we are having a slight cold front right now and it made me turn to this sweet, vintage book for a bit of snuggle-reading with my toddler. An old Ukrainian folktale that has been done a time or two, this version remains my favorite. It is the story of a boy’s lost mitten that becomes shelter for a surprising amount of animals during the coldest day of winter. Retold by Alvin Tresselt from a (gorgeous!) adaptation by E. Rachev and illustrated by Yaroslava, warm up today with The Mitten, 1964.

Book Review: The Bear’s Song By Benjamin Chaud

Happy New Year everyone! December was such a crazy month. I’m so glad I did another year of 25 Days of Christmas books and the Cybils round 1 panelist job was a blast but incredibly exhausting leading right up into the holiday. Thanks for being patient with my bit of an extended break. I hope you’ll come back and read with me again! I am now ready for a new year of reviews and lists and other fun book blogging ideas my brain is sorting through.

25 Days – Book 25: Who Is Coming To Our House?

Merry Christmas! We made it to the end of our second year of 25 Days of Christmas Children’s Books. This season went so fast! For our Christmas day book, I have a sweet board book edition of a story from 1988. A barnyard prepares for a guest with small animal tasks to tidy and clean, all prodded by a little mouse who keeps insisting that someone special is coming. This is Who Is Coming To Our House? by Joseph Slate, illustrations by Ashley Wolff.
