September

September is my favorite month and always goes by too quickly. I found this little book about months at the beginning of September, before the first day of school, and yet here it is now going up. Perhaps I’ll flip to October next week for everyone.

I have been looking for this book for ages and finally spotted it in our new Honesty Bookshop for only a £1. The best things come in September! It is A Year is a Window with paintings by Erik Blegvad and verses by Richard Jackson from 1963.

My favorite Septembers are always autumnal, with school supplies, and leaves just starting to turn, and glimpses of pumpkins and other harvesty things appearing. September is a short and somewhat chaotic month, kicking everything off for the new school year. School buses here in the UK are not always yellow, but I think the iconic yellow school bus will always bring the nostalgia and thoughts of September.

Hope your September has been lovely and not too busy and that it is ushering all the lovely delights of the autumn and holiday seasons.

Review: Miss Twiggley’s Tree By Dorothea Warren Fox

Lately I am loving the idea of sharing an older and sometimes vintage book on Fridays and the one I pulled out today has been an absolute favorite this past year. A book about a quiet, independent woman and her dog who find themselves a bit outcast from the town because of their peculiarities… until disaster strikes the town and they are the kindest and only ones to help. Come be completely charmed and a bit emboldened by Miss Twiggley’s Tree by Dorothea Warren Fox, 1966.

25 Days – Book 24: The Night Before Christmas (Fujikawa)

Christmas Eve is finally here, and what would this countdown be without a Night Before Christmas book? Thankfully, the world of children’s literature never runs out of new illustrated versions of the famous poem. This is my newest vintage find for this particular day, and it is a good one. The Night Before Christmas by Clement C. Moore, pictures by Gyo Fujikawa, 1961.

Let’s Read Three: Summer Books!

Happy summer everyone! Well, Western Hemisphere friends that is. I was hoping to post these summer books on the actual first day of summer two days ago; but alas, summer came bounding in with a summer cold for me. Nevertheless, I am excited about the warm months and the many lovely things it holds. We started our summer bucket list and are definitely looking for lots of summery literature to fill our thoughts and dreams. These three are all vintage, simply because they came to mind first and are just lovely favorites. Let’s read three books about summer!

Let’s Read Three: Father’s Day books!

This week has felt very focused on dads, even more so than usual thanks to Father’s Day this Sunday, and my husband being out of town all week. I’m starting to think he planned it that way as my girls have been talking about Daddy non-stop and we all cannot wait for his arrival. Unfortunately though, single parenting for the week has made any hopes of fun Father’s Day gifts go completely out the window. Survival first; celebration planning second. But, I did what I always tend to do when celebrating or thinking about something specific… we read Dad-themed books. And of course reading several books in succession made me think, I need to post those as a Let’s Read Three series! So, lucky you, I’ve got not one – but two posts forthcoming all about dads.

Let’s Read Three: Robin Books!

Spring has apparently squashed my life, or at least my blogging ability. But, I am attempting to resurface with this silly trio about a little creature that has captured our attention the most this spring. Robins were one of the first things we noticed as spring hinted its arrival and they became a very delightful sight for my girls to point out every time one crossed our path in the busy city. They are such friendly birds with their bright orange tummies and spirited hopping about. Robins won’t let you ignore spring and all the changes it signals. So let’s read three books about robins!
