Book Trailer: Xander’s Panda Party by Park & Phelan

Another fun book trailer for a sweet book recently released. I just love Matt Phelan’s art.

And random fact, panda bears were one of my favorite animals for a while as a kid.

Book Review: Maria Had a Little Llama/María Tenía Una Llamita by Angela Dominguez

I have been longing to post on this book for months now and here I am finally getting around to it. It officially hit the shelves in August, but I have been eagerly anticipating its arrival since April when Betsy Bird posted about it. I knew immediately this one would get me. A bilingual adaptation of the familiar nursery rhyme “Mary Had a Little Lamb” that is unique, culturally informative, and just plain stunning. Here is Maria Had a Little Llama/María Tenía Una Llamita by Angela Dominguez, 2013.

Book Review: Sophie’s Squash By Pat Zietlow Miller & Anne Wilsdorf

Today I’m delighted to share a peek at a brand-new book that I simply adore. I was hoping to fit it into this year’s fall book list, but my book budget is slim and I still await securing my own copy. (Thanks to Union Ave Books for the look into this one.) This is an endearing story about a little girl who takes to a recently purchased vegetable and cares for it despite its growing fragile composition. Here is Sophie’s Squash by Pat Zietlow Miller, pictures by Anne Wilsdorf, 2013.

Children’s Picture Books For Back To School, 2013

Believe it or not, August is here and that can mean only one thing: back-to-school themes are everywhere! I wouldn’t normally call myself a follower, but I openly admit to loving the back-to-school time of year. Those store sections suddenly packed with notebooks, pencils, backpacks, and the smell of Scotch Tape absolutely make me giddy. I’ve always felt this way. Getting my new school books each year was like a sort of Christmas in September. (Why on earth do schools start so early now?) Since I’m no longer in the mass of students and my child won’t be for a while either, I will celebrate the oncoming of the school year (and the hint of fall right behind!) by making lists of my favorite school-themed picture books, and inevitably buying a few school supplies for myself while I’m at it. You never know when you’ll need an awesome patterned folder or another pack of Sharpies!

Here is my 2013 list of fifteen picture books that center around school in some form and make me slightly nostalgic for those childhood schooldays.

Book Review: Little Red Writing By Joan Holub & Melissa Sweet

Confession: I have a very slight obsession with the story of “Little Red Riding Hood.” I know I am not alone in this as I continually find book after book that reillustrates, adapts, or references this famous tale. My collection of said adaptations is slowly growing and I hope to feature more of them now that my penchant toward collecting them is out in the open. I would not have planned my first “little red” review to be what I’m about to share, but I am extra super excited to start off the reviews for the “little red riding hood” tag here with an extremely clever, bizarrely concocted version such as this beauty coming out this fall. That’s right, I’ve got a sneak preview for you! Thanks to some new friends at Chronicle Books, I received this lovely book in the mail last week with hopes that I would like it and want to show it off. Yes and yes! Now it would not have been hard for someone to do their research and see that I am a fan of anything Melissa Sweet creates; but how they knew about my soft spot for this particular tale, I can only wonder. Well played Chronicle.

Without further ado, allow me to present this marvelous adaptation of a much beloved fairytale. Here is Little Red Writing by Joan Holub, pictures by Melissa Sweet, coming October 2013.

Book Review: Rain! by Ashman & Robinson

Yesterday was a dreary and very wet day for us and at one moment I found myself searching for a good book to lift the household spirits when this smiling frog-kid caught my eye from the top of a pile. I had not read through it yet, but had read many wonderful reviews and interviews with the author and illustrator, so my expectations were high (and skeptical, as always). Let me just say, we were delighted. This is a simple story about a rainy morning told from two differing perspectives and it packs a lot of heart and leaves you with a big smile. This is Rain! by Linda Ashman, pictures by Christian Robinson, 2013.
