Review: What Happened To You? By Catchpole & George

I have been waiting incredibly too long to finally share this book with you. This has launched itself to the top of my favorites pile for months. A book about disability, questions, imagination, and most of all pirates. Delight in What Happened To You? by James Catchpole, illustrated by Karen George, 2021.

Review: Outside, Inside By LeUyen Pham

I have a new favorite book. A bold statement to make, but it is in fact, a new favorite. It speaks to the moment currently at hand, this horrid year and more that we as a collective humanity are dealing with and learning from the pandemic. But it will also serve as a reminder and a memory and a memento when this situation is over. This book encapsulates so much of the arc of what we are experiencing and what we all hope to see on the other side incredibly soon. I also hope that it becomes a classic of some sort, a reminder for every generation after this of something that was so big and so awful and so hard that only some of us made it through and are forever changed as a result. This is a stunning book, a this-very-moment book, and a hope-filled book. Please go get this book, for yourself and for everyone you love. We all need it, now and after. Take a look at Outside, Inside by LeUyen Pham, 2021.

Review: What I Like Most By Murphy & Cheng-Liang

Welcome 2021! I could make excuses for the silence in this space through 10 months of last year; but I think we all know what happened in 2020. Instead I am starting off the year with one of my favorite books from last year, an ode to celebrating our favorite things and focusing on what means the most to us – big and small. Have a look at this charming book: What I Like Most by Mary Murphy, illustrated by Zhu Cheng-Liang, 2019 (published in the U.S. in 2020).

Book Review: No Fits, Nilson! by Zachariah OHora

One of my favorite things about picture books and my kids, is observing which books become favorites. Sometimes the new favorite is a book I purposefully chose, strategically kept out in sight, and then felt contentedly smug when it easily won their hearts just like I thought it would. Other times, I feel shocked and a little perplexed at why certain books become a reigning favorite. And I’m maybe even a little relieved when they fade into the distance depending on how much I enjoyed the book myself or strained under the repetition and reader requirements (I’m looking at you Sandra Boynton’s Doggies). Then there are others that I myself admired, had on my own shelves for months or years even (this is the problem with owning too many books), and for some random reason I finally pull it down to share it with the kids. Bingo! They are hooked.

Book Review: This Is Sadie By O’Leary & Morstad

This book has been on the top of my review drafts for a couple weeks now because I am desperately in love with it. While I love picture books and I frequently compare choosing a favorite to the impossibility of choosing a favorite star, occasionally a book will cross my path and completely steal my heart. This is one of them.
