The first book on this year’s Christmas book advent list is a gorgeous, fragile, colorful pop-up by Robert Sabuda, The Christmas Alphabet. Originally published in 1994, this is the “Deluxe Anniversary Edition” from 2004 and I have absolutely no idea what makes it different from the original as I have never checked.

25 Days of Children’s Books For Christmas, 2013
December 1 has arrived! I may be setting myself up for failure here, but I’ve decided to attempt another Christmas book advent list. Last year’s was so much fun and quite inspiring for my book enjoyment and writing, so let’s give it another go. I’m hopeful that I’ll hit every day and my accumulated list includes some books I didn’t get to share last year, some new to me ones, and even some hot-off-the-press 2013 editions from my favorite bookstore. I hope you’ll follow along and maybe discover some new Christmas picture books to enjoy yourself and with the little ones in your life.

Happy Halloween! I have been wanting to post some fun books all week, and had a few new ones lined up but every time I sat down to write about them, I was stuck. Here is It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown by Charles M. Schultz, 1967.

In honor of tomorrow’s holiday of celebrating our dear mothers, I was positively delighted to score this sweet, non-fiction vintage book called most simply, Mother’s Day. Quite a bit different than the typical book I like to write about here, I still felt this one was lovely enough to show it off a bit. I fear that it is most likely difficult to find unless you have a really good library that still stocks some old titles like this, so I’ll share and show a bit more than I often do. Not to mention this is a long book, being more of a historical, research-driven book. This is a book that was written while the author searched for the answers to a child’s question about the holiday’s origin. So, if you’ve ever wondered where Mother’s Day originated, or like me, always assumed it was a Hallmark-created holiday, then take a look at this vintage book that details where the idea came from and how it spread around the world. This is Mother’s Day by Mary Kay Phelan, illustrated by Aliki, 1965.

No matter how spring is treating you in your part of the world (we have snow here!), hopefully you are looking forward to the arrival of Sunday and its special spring holiday, Easter! To help you prepare and celebrate I have compiled a handful of books, well sixteen actually, that range in topics but all relate in some form to this flowery event. Easter is a holiday with lots of themes, all of which are special and beautiful to read about. I had a lot of fun tracking down an assortment of books, so there are some serious, lots of silly, a couple Christian, and a plethora of bunnies, chicks, eggs and even Santa Claus! Here are sixteen children’s picture books for Easter (beware, it’s long!). Continue reading “Children’s Picture Books For Easter, 2013”
