25 Days – Book 8: Santa Calls

Today’s book is by the spectacular author/illustrator William Joyce. Santa Calls is about the Christmas of 1908 and the adventures of a young boy; his friend, Spaulding; and his little sister, Esther.

It is a high-flying, daredevil adventure with dark elves, an evil queen, licorice weapons, and much more. But the real heart of the story is sibling love.

And that’s all I can really say about this one without giving an ounce of it away. I never would have thought I would be so touched by a Santa story and the wishes of adventurous children, but I get truly choked up at this one. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a crazy whirlwind of action, a perfect story for boys. But it also has the true heart, love, and genuine friendship morals that every parent—and little sister—hope for.

The art of this book is stupendous, just like the plot. William Joyce is a wonder as an author and an illustrator; and with fifty+ books under his belt, he knows what he is doing. The detail of his work is lovely and the man sure knows how to choose a color palette. I’m always in awe of his work and love to find a new one. If you shy away from Santa books, give this one a chance. The big man takes the back seat as the children experience a Christmas like no other.
