For today’s book in the countdown to Christmas, I have yet another new Christmas book for the pile. From the creators of the beloved and hilarious Click, Clack, Moo: Cows That Type, comes this humorous Christmas Eve tale about animals too eager to see Santa and getting stuck in the chimney. Check out Click, Clack, Ho! Ho! Ho! by Doreen Cronin, illustrated by Betsy Lewin, 2015.
This book is a major win for my young kids, especially my one year old. Not only is she fond of ducks, but she is quite excitable about any imagery of Santa. So that cover has her sold! The book itself is geared towards a young audience with repetition and simple humor. Within just a couple pages, they were wide-eyed and giggling.
In this Christmas Eve story, a few creatures are definitely stirring. Farmer Brown is making the final touches on the decorating and hears something on the roof. He thinks it is Santa, so he rushes to bed. But it is a duck repelling to the roof. Yep, a duck repelling onto the roof.
Then, the favorite line: “Ho! Ho! Uh-oh.” And duck gets stuck in the chimney. So the sheep come to rescue him. And then they get stuck. So the cow comes… and yes, all the animals come and they all get stuck.
Finally, Santa has to come unstuck duck (and the others). Thankfully, Santa never gets stuck and a happy Christmas is had by all, though there is quite a bit of chimney soot around!
The repetition, the comical illustrations, the simple plot… it all works together to make a fun, silly tale, perfect for a humorous holiday read.
See you tomorrow on this picture book Christmas countdown.
