Oh, I have such a sweet book for you today! I’ve been waiting to see this one and the other day I spied it at the library, brand new, and jumped at it. Arriving just last year, but I believe late in the year, this book is a loose companion to this duo’s previous creations, When You Were Small, 2006, and Where You Came From, 2008 . I actually hadn’t seen those yet (so many books, so little time!) but I could not wait to share this one. I know it is a little early to be thinking of Mother’s Day, but if you are ahead of the game add this to your list. I couldn’t wait for my own purchased copy to get here before sharing, so here is When I Was Small by Sara O’Leary, with illustrations by Julie Morstad, 2012.

Quote On The Wonders & Magic Inside Books
“Sometimes I feel as though these old books are like this [candy Easter] egg. They have the same sort of wonders lying dormant inside of them, magical windows into the past and a world long gone, to imaginary places and adventures waiting patiently for rediscovery. Unused and unnoticed on a shelf in a library or thrift shop or antique store, they wait until one day they are picked up and read and loved and brought back to life. Their magic will stay alive so long as someone is reading them and that, my friends, is a wondrous thing indeed.”
Book Review: Spring Is A New Beginning By Joan Walsh Anglund
It seems spring has finally found us here in the Southeast. Thankfully I also (re)discovered this little spring book in my tiny books basket. Measuring just 4″ x 6.75″ it truly is a darling book. There is just something about the small books that are perfect for little hands, feel like a small treasure, and almost always are incredibly heartwarming. Such is this one: Spring Is a New Beginning by Joan Walsh Anglund, 1963.

Super excited to see this book. Not sure my childhood self could have handled it seeing as I was indeed afraid of the dark, although maybe it would have helped. My adult self is ready to give it a read though!
Book Review: The Fool Of The World And The Flying Ship By Ransome & Shulevitz
Seeing as it is April 1, also known as All Fools’ Day, I find it only fitting to share a book about one who is labeled as the Fool of the World. The story was originally published in 1916 as part of Old Peter’s Russian Tales by Arthur Ransome. Illustrator Uri Shulevitz has taken the story and given it beautiful illustrations which won him the Caldecott medal in 1969. So let’s celebrate an old Russian Tale and learn that perhaps a fool really isn’t what we think he is. This is The Fool of the World and the Flying Ship by Arthur Ransome, pictures by Uri Shulevtiz, 1968.

No matter how spring is treating you in your part of the world (we have snow here!), hopefully you are looking forward to the arrival of Sunday and its special spring holiday, Easter! To help you prepare and celebrate I have compiled a handful of books, well sixteen actually, that range in topics but all relate in some form to this flowery event. Easter is a holiday with lots of themes, all of which are special and beautiful to read about. I had a lot of fun tracking down an assortment of books, so there are some serious, lots of silly, a couple Christian, and a plethora of bunnies, chicks, eggs and even Santa Claus! Here are sixteen children’s picture books for Easter (beware, it’s long!). Continue reading “Children’s Picture Books For Easter, 2013”
