Book Review: If You’re Hoppy By Sayre & Urbanovic

Before I begin, I must issue a warning that there is a large chance that this post will get a certain song stuck in your head for the day. Please forgive me. But, hopefully this book will also give you a new version of the song to sing, which in my opinion, is quite fun. So, today I present a really enjoyable book that you can actually read or sing! Perfect for spring, great for acting out, and full of silly lovable animals – here is If You’re Hoppy by April Pulley Sayre, pictures by Jackie Urbanovic, 2011.

Book Review: Tea Rex By Molly Idle

A dinosaur and a tea party – has there ever been a better combination for a children’s book? I think perhaps not. I picked up my copy of this brand-spanking new piece of fantastic work by Molly Idle on Saturday. It is supposedly being released tomorrow, but I guess it really does pay to shop local independent bookstores and request they stock something! This is a brilliant book, sure to delight boys and girls alike and send them into a fit of giggles and planning their own rompous affair. This is Tea Rex by Molly Idle, 2013.

Book Review: When I Was Small By Sara O’Leary & Julie Morstad

Oh, I have such a sweet book for you today! I’ve been waiting to see this one and the other day I spied it at the library, brand new, and jumped at it. Arriving just last year, but I believe late in the year, this book is a loose companion to this duo’s previous creations, When You Were Small, 2006, and Where You Came From, 2008 . I actually hadn’t seen those yet (so many books, so little time!) but I could not wait to share this one. I know it is a little early to be thinking of Mother’s Day, but if you are ahead of the game add this to your list. I couldn’t wait for my own purchased copy to get here before sharing, so here is When I Was Small by Sara O’Leary, with illustrations by Julie Morstad, 2012.

Book Review: Spring Is A New Beginning By Joan Walsh Anglund

It seems spring has finally found us here in the Southeast. Thankfully I also (re)discovered this little spring book in my tiny books basket. Measuring just 4″ x 6.75″ it truly is a darling book. There is just something about the small books that are perfect for little hands, feel like a small treasure, and almost always are incredibly heartwarming. Such is this one: Spring Is a New Beginning by Joan Walsh Anglund, 1963.

Book Review: The Fool Of The World And The Flying Ship By Ransome & Shulevitz

Seeing as it is April 1, also known as All Fools’ Day, I find it only fitting to share a book about one who is labeled as the Fool of the World. The story was originally published in 1916 as part of Old Peter’s Russian Tales by Arthur Ransome. Illustrator Uri Shulevitz has taken the story and given it beautiful illustrations which won him the Caldecott medal in 1969. So let’s celebrate an old Russian Tale and learn that perhaps a fool really isn’t what we think he is. This is The Fool of the World and the Flying Ship by Arthur Ransome, pictures by Uri Shulevtiz, 1968.

Book Review: Brave Girl by Markel & Sweet

Today I present yet another knock-out book from last year that has fantastic art by the (previously admired) collage-illustration fiend, Melissa Sweet. This is a surprisingly intriguing work of non-fiction that tells a powerful tale about a five-foot tall young lady and her fight for the rights of workers. Here is Brave Girl: Clara and the Shirtwaist Makers’ Strike of 1909 by Michelle Markel, pictures by Melissa Sweet, 2012.
