Book Review: My Red Umbrella By Robert Bright

Whew! What a day Monday was with all the amazing children and adolescent book awards. I sat glued to my computer for the hour broadcast and it is better than the Oscars for this book loving nut. I laughed, teared up, tweeted and cheered. If you haven’t seen the results, here is the official Caldecott announcement. Jon Klassen took the Caldecott for This Is Not My Hat (which I don’t own yet!) and he also received an honor for Extra Yarn. He is the second person in 75 years of awards to take the Caldecott and an honor within the same year. Hooray! (Leonard Weisgard is the other illustrator to accomplish this feat and that was back in 1947 when he won for The Little Island, and Rain Drop Splash received an honor.)

There were many other awards as well, some of which I know nothing about (sadly!). But I was excited to hear about Mo Willems Let’s Go For a Drive winning a Geisel Honor (a.k.a. Dr. Seuss). I already have several other winners on hold at the library that I haven’t seen yet, so I’ll be sure to pass along the word if I become enamored with one.

With all the awards and 2012 wrap up behind us, I’m itching to talk vintage books again as well as new ones. As the east coast is getting pummeled with rain right now, my mind got fixed on this cute little red book from 1959. So here is My Red Umbrella, by Robert Bright.

Book Review: Baby Bear Sees Blue By Ashley Wolff

This sweet book found its way to me just a couple weeks ago. It has been on many lists of top books from 2012 and I finally came across it at the library so I decided to see for myself. Today’s review is Baby Bear Sees Blue by Ashley Wolff.

25 Days — Book 25: Twelve Days of Christmas

And so begins the Twelve Days of Christmas. And for our last book, I bring a little bit of silliness. I know the true spirit of Christmas is reflective and joyous; all wrapped up in a tiny baby. But there is always room for cleverness and laughter! So for our last book, we have a fantastic creation from the ever amazing Jack Kent. Published in 1973, this book brought a new perspective and appreciation for a traditional song that I have always loathed. This is Jack Kent’s Twelve Days of Christmas.

Day 25 – Book 22: Santa Claus: The World’s Number One Toy Expert

Book 22 is by the fabulous Marla Frazee from 2005, Santa Claus: The World’s Number One Toy Expert.

This book is fantastic. Not being much of a Santa lover myself, this book completely changes my mind about the jolly fellow. This is a story about that famous guy in the red suit that pretty much only gets talked about in December. If you’ve ever wondered how on earth dear old Santa gets everything done and always just right, this is the book for you.

25 Days – Book 20: Clifford’s Christmas

Our 20th book for this Christmas book list is another childhood favorite of mine. Oh how I loved the Clifford books! So we must celebrate the coming holiday with the big red dog in Clifford’s Christmas, created in 1984 by Norman Bridwell.

In this Christmas edition of the classic Clifford stories, Emily Elizabeth starts off the holiday season at Thanksgiving when Santa ends the Thanksgiving Day Parade.
