Day 18 is a lovely day for a beautiful book. The classic tale from O. Henry, rescripted by Michael Neugebauer, with stunning and large illustrations by Lisbeth Zwerger, here is The Gift of the Magi, 1982.
I do love this classic story from O. Henry. The way he writes is so clever, with such a unique narrative tone. You cannot help but love his characters of Della and Jim.
But most of all with this book, I love the illustrations. I’m a huge admirer of Lisbeth Zwerger’s work. They are breathtaking, soft, beautiful, captivating, and so many more adjectives.
The pairing of Zwerger and O. Henry’s touching story are a perfect match. I highly recommend hunting down this edition. Rereading The Gift of the Magi is always a good idea to set your heart right around the giving season, and Zwerger adds the touch of beauty on top.
“And here I have lamely related to you the uneventful chronicle of two foolish children in a flat who most unwisely sacrificed for each other the greatest treasures of their house.”
“But in last word to the wise of these days let it be said that all who give gifts these two were the wisest. Of all who give and receive gifts, such as they are wisest. They are the magi.”
