One of our family favorite books from last year, Rectangle Time makes us laugh with every read. A story about a cat trying to make sense of a child learning to read, this book will send you into giggles. Take a peek at Rectangle Time by Pamela Paul, pictures by Becky Cameron, 2021.

Review: Tight Times By Shook Hazen & Schart Hyman

I think we’re all tired of hearing that it’s been a difficult, weird, hard, strange, unprecedented [insert over-used adjective here] year. Even more so, we’re all tired of living it. While I continue to prep posts about new and newish books (I have so many!); I also love the classics, vintage, obscure older books that speak to timeless issues. They can be so comforting, surprising, and reminders of days past – a reminder that we’ll get through this too.

Today I wanted to drop in with a book I’ve thought about often over this year. I collected it years ago as it is one of my favorite children’s book illustrators ever. I am incredibly drawn to her style and choices and lines – but I’m getting ahead of myself. Join me in this lovely, difficult, emotional, and yet so perfectly childlike book about rough economic times in a city family. Check out Tight Times by Barbara Shook Hazen, illustrated by Trina Schart Hyman, 1979.

25 Days – Book 16: Kitten Construction Company

Today’s book is just plain adorable and fun. A graphic novel about house kittens who just want to be taken seriously and build something fantastic. It’s clever, cute, and makes you think twice about the ridiculous names humans give pets! Check out Kitten Construction Company: Meet the House Kittens by John Patrick Green, 2018.

Book Review: Cookie’s Week By Cindy Ward & Tomie dePaola

Today’s book is a sweet little gem from the 1980s that just so happened to be one of my all-time favorites when I was little. It generally seems to be true that most little girls go through a love of cats phase. I certainly did, despite my severe allergies, and this hilarious, short, and clever book about a spunky little cat was just the treat for me. Here is Cookie’s Week by Cindy Ward, illustrated by Tomie dePaola, 1988.
